HERE ARE WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT
AL-ANON RECOVERY IN THE DANE COUNTY JAIL
VOLUNTEER IN THE JAIL
AlAnon District 8 facilitates a women’s Al-Anon group which meets every other week in the Dane County Jail at 6:30 PM on Saturdays. When we have a few more volunteers, we will be able to meet weekly. This is not a drop-in meeting; volunteers must be approved by the jail and sign up to volunteer once a month with at least one other Al-Anon member.
Prospective volunteers for the jail meeting must be female, have at least one year in the program, have a sponsor, have worked the steps, and have strong personal boundaries in order to maintain physical and emotional safety of themselves, the inmates and jail staff. All volunteers must attend a mandatory four-hour orientation in the jail, which is only held on Wednesday mornings. The existing volunteers invite prospective volunteers attend one of our periodic meetings to learn more. To find out when the next volunteer’s meeting is, send an email message to danejailalanon@gmail.com.
DONATE LITERATURE
You may donate new or gently used 12 Step literature at the Fitchburg Serenity Club (near the front door), at the Northport Clubhouse, and at St. John’s Lutheran church (in the “lounge”) on East Washington Avenue in downtown Madison. You may also mail literature donations to “Chaplains, Dane County Jail, 210 Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd, Madison, WI 53703.” The chaplains give the literature to inmates upon request. Setting up a drop-box at your meeting location is a good joint project with AA and other 12 step programs.
WHAT TO DONATE: Forum magazines, pamphlets and soft-sided AlAnon books and daily readers such as One Day at a Time, Courage to Change and Hope for Today. AA Grapevine magazines and other 12 step literature are also welcome. Remove or obliterate all personal information before donating. Keep your eyes open for AlAnon books at garage sales and used bookstores.
WHAT NOT TO DONATE: non-12 step literature and literature with hard covers.
DONATE MONEY FOR LITERATURE
Checks may be sent to AlAnon District 8 and earmarked “Jail AlAnon” and will be used to buy newcomer packets and daily readers for inmates.
WELCOME TO ALL NEWCOMERS
Some of the new faces at your meetings may have been in jail and be looking for support in living a sober recovering life.
